Annual Scottish Fest (91st) USA - Costa Mesa, California 2026

Saturday, May 23, 2026 - This event was organized by the United Scottish Society and is held annually over Memorial Day weekend at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California. It is said to be the oldest and largest festival of its kind in Southern California. Records indicate it had a modest beginning in 1932 as a community gathering and Highland Games to celebrate Scottish heritage in the region. After being held at various locations for many decades, it made the 150-acre Costa Mesa site its permanent home in 2008.

This was the first year I became aware of it and decided we would go as a family. It was very well attended, both by participants and an audience that appeared to come from all over Southern California. I was particularly impressed with the "Pipes & Drums." The Massed Bands that took to the field for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were truly remarkable. There were several other events, including Heavy Athletics (Highland Games), dance competitions, and live music. The atmosphere was festive, and our ears were given no rest from the sound of bagpipes, whether they were performing in competition or practicing off to the side. There was also a wide variety of Scottish food available.

I concentrated more on video for this event because the movement and sound were really what made it special. Next time, I will be better prepared and will spend more time covering some of the other events.

The photos and videos below should give you a feel for the event. They were all taken with the iPhone 17 Pro Max.Body text here

There were several bands from many areas of Southern California. This one was fine tuning their act before the competition and closing ceremony.
